Annual General Meeting and Business Briefing

"ENTERTAINMENT OR BUST?"

Wednesday25th July 2-4pm
Dirty Martini, 11-12 Russell Street (below Tuttons

Recent changes in the law, together with ever tougher enforcement mean that the licensed trade is under pressure like never before. Are the constraints and restrictions of operating within the capital becoming too onerous to bear? Or are new controls required to deal with the threat to public order and nuisance?

This is the focus of the Westminster Licensee’s next Members’ Event which will see leading figures from Westminster Council, Police and other key stakeholders debate current issues facing the licensed retail trade.

Guest speakers include:

  • Andrew Ralph, Westminster City Council: with the smoking ban newly in place, what lessons can we learn from its implementation and what challenges have the trade and local authority faced? Are there any future policy developments expected?
  • Inspector Acheson:  the new head of licensing in Westminster gives us his view on how the police work with the trade to promote safer streets?
  • Project Griffin:  following the latest terrorist attack in the West End, what steps do operators need to take in response
  • Philip Matthews, MD Covent Garden Restaurants and Chair of the WLA will reply on behalf of the trade.

As usual, our panel of legal and professional experts will be on hand to look ahead to the challenges and opportunities for the next 6 months and to answer queries on a host of other operational issues including gambling, licensing and planning reform as well as changes to employment law.

The event will conclude with a drinks reception, providing an opportunity to meet informally colleagues in the industry, learn more about the work of the association, raise issues of concern and network. It is an event not to be missed.

The event is free to WLA Members. Non-members should contact Kate Nicholls.
